Equipping community with sign language

The Community Development Department (JAPEM) of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) conducted a basic sign language workshop.

The workshop, a joint effort by the People with Different Abilities Services Section of JAPEM and the National Association for the Hearing-Impaired (OKP), was held at the Kampong Bukit Beruang Community Hall in Tutong District yesterday.

The guest of honour, Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) at the MCYS Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud officiated.

Legislative Council member and Penghulu of Mukim Telisai Yang Berhormat Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit, Acting Tutong District Officer, Acting Village Head of Kampong Bukit Beruang, as well as officers from JAPEM and MCYS were also present.

Some 50 participants are attending the workshop that also features a drama sketch titled Dengar Daku: Pentingnya Bahasa Isyarat performed by trainers and facilitators of Pusat Bahagia as well as members of the OKP.

The workshop, aimed to raise community awareness on the importance of sign language,
ends tomorrow.

Some 238 members have registered under the OKP nationwide since August.
