Sultan makes impromptu visit to UNISSA

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam made an unscheduled visit to Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) in Gadong yesterday.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by UNISSA Rector Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal. His Majesty’s visit commenced at the Administration Section followed by having a closer look at lecture rooms and other infrastructure including the canteen and surau.

His Majesty then toured UNISSA’s residential college for a closer look at the safety and comfort aspects. Currently some 119 students stay at the male hostels and 180 at the female hostels.

In the first year when the university was established in 2007, some 107 students began their tertiary study at the first Islamic university in Brunei Darussalam.

UNISSA currently houses some 1,500 students. UNISSA also became a centre of study for 181 students from 25 countries.

Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah and Minister of Education Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman were also present.
