A SPECIAL lecture on Malay literature entitled ‘Teori Pengkaedahan Melayu dan Prinsip Penerapannya’ at Balai Sarmayuda, Language and Literature Bureau (DPB), attracted scores of experts and enthusiasts of the Malay language.
The event was the second in a series of lectures called ‘Kesusasteraan Bandingan (SKKB) XIX, 2016’ with Brunei Darussalam as the host country this time around.
The lecture series began its first session in Singapore on August 27. It was given the nod of approval during a regional meeting at the 21st Southeast Asian Literature Council (MASTERA) Conference to be conducted at the Mastera’s five member countries.
Indonesia will hold the next lecture series on November 3, followed by Thailand on November 7, and it will conclude in Malaysia on November 10.
The lecture series is a prominent component of the project under Mastera held annually since 1997 and this event in Brunei has tasked Mastera Malaysia to facilitate for the other member countries.

The event’s guest of honour, Hajah Nortijah binti Haji Mohd Hassan, the Acting Director of DBP and Chairperson of Mastera Brunei Darussalam, in her speech commended Mastera for its achievements in enhancing and elevating the status and utilisation of Malay literature, particularly in the Malay Archipelago.
These efforts have witnessed the coordination of activities and research on Malay/Indonesia literature in a unified way as well as the availability of a relevant platform for literary experts to further develop and showcase their talents, conduct translation and publication with the required acknowledgement in the achievement of the knowledge of literature, she added.
The event’s special lecturer was Professor Dato Dr Haji Hashim bin Awang, a Mastera expert from Malaysia.
Among the series’ key objectives included to give guidance and exposure to students, graduates, researchers in Southeast Asia to obtain a deeper understanding of Malay literature; to develop and enhance the level of expertise amongst researchers, literary experts and intellectuals; to generate relevant dialogue sessions among researchers and intellectuals of Malay literature, especially in the discipline of Kesusasteraan Bandingan; to generate relevant ideas and creative thoughts to further enhance the theory and application of Kesusasteraan Bandingan; to make available a vehicle in the dissemination of the discipline of Kesusasteraan Bandingan in the Mastera context, as well as to publish lecture books as references, in particular Malay literature, in the field of Kesusasteraan Bandingan.
