BESIDES sport, regatta also promotes friendship and foster ties in Borneo through participation from neighbouring countries in the competition.
In addition to visitors, relatives from neighbouring countries like Lawas, Limbang, Baram as well as others will also visit Brunei to witness the annual event whereby the family ties is further strengthened.
Through the established friendly ties, the regatta also promotes peace and harmony between Brunei and neighbouring countries in Borneo.
The important role that Brunei Darussalam Regatta has played was highlighted by Dr Haji Tassim bin Haji Abu Bakar in his deliberation at the regatta discussion under the theme ‘Friendship through the sport of one Borneo regatta’ held at the Art Gallery of Dermaga Diraja yesterday morning.
From his childhood experience and research, Dr Haji Tassim also highlighted some of the differences between the old and current Brunei Darussalam Regatta.
Also present at discussion was the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Haji Mohd Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad along with other officials.
Organised in conjunction with the Brunei Darussalam Regatta 2016 Exhibition currently taking place at the Dermaga Diraja by the Brunei History Centre and Museums Department, the aim of the event is to further disseminate information on the history of Brunei Darussalam Regatta to the community of the country through various written researches.
Through the platform, it is also hoped that information shared especially to the younger generation will help to preserve the heritage of regatta culture in Brunei Darussalam and increase the interest of carrying out in-depth research on Brunei Darussalam Regatta.
Others speakers included Pengiran Hajah Fatimah binti Pengiran Haji Md Noor and Norliah binti Md Zain who touched on ‘Brunei Darussalam Regatta: The Sporting Glory of the Nation’.
