The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Brunei Darussalam is set to host a painting exhibition titled ‘Timeless’ by local artist Haji Osman bin Haji Mohammad at its premises on
November 19-29.

The exhibition will also showcase eight paintings by the Manager and Curator of Creative Space Art Gallery & Studio Osveanne Osman. A preview was held for the media attended by Turkish Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Mehmet Suat Akgün and Haji Osman.

The official opening of the event will be held with the participation of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin and Datin Nurhayana Janis binti Abdullah as the guests of honour.

The exhibition will be open to the public from November 20-29 at the Embassy Chancery, No 27, Simpang 52, Kampong Manggis Satu from 9.30am to 5pm.

Timeless – in a sense, is a memory or record suspended in time, never changing yet present today which is encapsulated in every piece of Haji Osman’s body of work which spans over five decades since the early ‘70s.

Having studied 3D design in 1980 and majoring in theatre design for his final year at the Central School of Art and Design (now known as Central Saint Martins) in London, England, Haji Osman offers the audience a study of his artistic style and development, as well as the story of time as it unfolds, making his work as an artist a valuable reference resource to the history and development of Brunei.

Haji Osman continues to experiment and find new forms of expression through art. As a self-taught artist, detailed expressions are visible in his works. He began his career as a designer in 1980 until the 1990s which then affected his style of expression. From 2000 onwards, a new divergence and traces of designer’s influence can be observed.

Side events will be organised including live sketching and panel discussion on ‘How to detect and nurture creativity in children?’ on November 21, masterclass with young artists on November 22, painting with seniors on November 24, an exclusive tour prepared for teachers in conjunction with Teacher’s Day on November 26, a workshop on creative approaches to making art on November 27, and an art talk on ‘What makes a piece of art, Art?’ on November 28.

Fifteen visitors will also be given the opportunity to draw or paint in the ‘challenge room’ on a selected theme every day.
