Pledge for physical activity to prevent stroke

Three Cabinet Ministers pledged to join the movement to increase physical activity to prevent stroke at the World Stroke Day event organised by Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) yesterday.

The event also saw the launch of the video for World Stroke Day by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah in his capacity as the Chairman of PJSC Board of Directors with Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar in his capacity as the Deputy Chairman of PJSC Board of Directors and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin.

This year’s campaign also highlighted the importance of supporting stroke survivors and their carers who face the challenge of disability.

According to the World Stroke Organization (WSO), one in four people around the world is at risk of having a stroke. Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, but almost all strokes could be prevented. This year’s theme #dontbetheone, aimed at reducing the risk of stroke such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, obesity and smoking through healthy lifestyle and effective treatment.

The event also saw an exercise routine by stroke patients, carers and staff of the Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre to encourage the public to #jointhemovement and engage in physical activity to reduce their risk.

Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Hj Mohd Amin Liew presented prizes to winners of a creative design competition in conjunction with World Stroke Day.

Muhammad Faizun bin Saufi won first place while Nadzirah Aibah binti Haji Bahe and Muhammad Azri bin Haji Ramlee won second and third.

The ministers also toured the exhibitions and joined in activities and games. Merchandise highlighting the World Stroke Day theme for 2020 such as hooded sweatshirts, dri-fit t-shirts and cotton tote bags are up for sales to help spread awareness and fund the PJSC stroke patients under the Department of Medical Social Worker.
