Following several incidents of heavy thundershowers in Brunei Darussalam, some low-lying areas in the Belait District are still experiencing flash floods.

Permanent Secretary (Security, Welfare and Law) at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) Mohd Amir Hairil bin Haji Mahmud, Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) at the MoHA Salminan bin Haji Burut and other officials visited the flood-hit areas yesterday, as a follow-up to the Temburong and Tutong visits recently.

Before heading out, the delegation was briefed by Belait District Officer Ramlee bin Haji Jamudin, who is also Chair of the Belait District Disaster Management Committee, on the current status and action taken by government agencies to provide assistance for affected residents.

Since November 23, 96 houses and 380 villagers in the Belait District have been affected by flood.

The permanent secretaries visited several houses in Kampong Sungai Mau and Jalan Kandul and handed over food rations and daily necessities to the affected families.

Legislative Council member and Acting Penghulu of Mukim Labi Yang Berhormat Hanapi bin Mohd Siput, on behalf of the Zone 2 in the Belait District, expressed gratitude to government agencies for their efforts in the relief mission.

“With the effort put forth by the government agencies, it has helped lessen the burden of the residents in troubled times.”

He also advised residents to stay vigilant in anticipation of flooding, especially those residing near rivers.

“We also advice residents to follow the instructions given by government agencies. They are made to prioritise the residents’ safety. We hope to ensure their daily lives can return to normal as soon as possible,” he said.
