Council for the Welfare of Persons with Different Abilities (MKOKU) held its annual appreciation dinner at Emperor’s Court, Manggis Mall yesterday.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin attended as the guest of honour, accompanied by spouse Datin Nurhayana Janis binti Abdullah Lim.
MKOKU President Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Alimin bin Haji Abdul Wahab said the appreciation dinner was aimed to reflect a more integrated and united OKU involvement under one organisation.
He continued that the organisation was established three years ago developing laterally and vertically in the OKU community.
The minister, meanwhile, said OKU affairs are among the priorities for the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports’ (MCYS), as detailed in its strategic plan.
The minister said there are plans to provide an avenue for OKU to obtain employment, such as a workshop where they can develop and contribute to the community.
The dinner saw attendance from representatives of organisations under MKOKU, including Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER), Centre for Children with Special Needs (KACA), Special Olympic Brunei Darussalam (SOBD), National Association for the Hearing Impaired (OKP), Down Syndrome Association (ABLE), Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind (BDNAB), the Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Association (PAPDA) and Learning Ladders Society (LLS).
