298 students compete in preliminary round of religious contest

A total of 298 students participated in the preliminary round of the Memorisation of Al-Quran and its understanding competition, which kicked off yesterday and runs until January 19.

The competition is an annual project of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) through the MABIMS Centre for Al-Quran Studies and Dissemination to glorify major Islamic calendar events, and one of the programmes of national level Nuzul Al-Quran (revelation of Al-Quran) held annually.

The preliminary round is held behind closed door at MABIMS Centre for Al-Quran Studies and Dissemination at the Ong Sum Ping condominium.

The competition is divided into five categories.

Category A is open to participants aged 13 and below. The participant will memorise selected verses from Juzuk 30 of Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Surah Al-Insyiqaq, Surah Al-Buruj, Surah At-Taariq, Surah Al-A’laa, Surah Al-Ghasyiyah, Surah Al-Fajr, Surah Al-Balad, Surah Asy-Syams, Surah Al-Layl and compilation of Surah-surah Lazim starting from Surah Adh-Dhuhaa till Surah An-Nas and the understanding of Surah An-Naba’, Surah An-Nazi’at, Surah ‘Abasa, Surah At-Takwir and Surah Al-Infitar.

Category B is open to students aged 14 and above. The student will memorise selected Surah from Surah Al-Kahf, Surah Luqman, Surah As-Sajdah, Surah Ar-Rahman, Surah Al-Waqi’ah, Surah Al-Mulk, Surah Al-Insan, Surah Yaasiin, Surah Al-Jinn as well understanding of Surah Al-Jumu’ah and Surah An-Nur.

Category C is open to all age groups. They will memorise three Juzuks of Al-Quran (from Juzuks 1-3) and share their understanding of Surah An-Nisa’.

Category D is open to all age levels, with participants required to memorise 15 Juzuks of Al-Quran from and share their understanding of Surah Maryam and Surah Taha.

Category E is open to all age levels. Participants are required to memorise 30 Juzuks of Al-Quran and share their understanding of Surah Asy-Syuraa, Surah Az-Zukhruf, Surah Ad-Dukhan and Surah Al-Jathiyah.

The competition will be held in three stages – preliminary, semi finals and finals.

Twelve participants with marks above 65 per cent will be selected in each category for the semi-final stage.
