The Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) started the first phase of its financial assistance under its Back to School project for underprivileged students for the new school year.
MKM is a registered charitable organisation in the country which has been assisting students for 11 years. The students are from underprivileged families, who are also receiving various forms of assistance from the organisation. Families must pass a financial means verification before they can register as clients.
MKM has some 350 students on their client list.
MKM will first check whether the clients are recipients of other ‘Back to School’ assistance before offering aid.
The students will be assisted with school uniforms including sports attire and shoes, school books and accessories and payment of overdue school fees if necessary.
MKM also collaborate with vendors to provide discounts.
MKM President Mohd Yusof Halim said, “We have identified 100 clients for the first phase.
Primary school students are allocated a maximum of BND250 each while secondary school students a maximum of BND350. The amount spent on each student varies according to their needs.”
MKM is carrying out a fundraising for the project and hopes to assist at least another 100 students in the second phase of the ‘Back to School’ project expected to be held at the end of February.
