Forty-four Year 6 students in the Curahan Ilmu Programme 2020, who passed with flying colours in last year’s Primary School Assessment (PSR) examination, were feted in a convocation ceremony yesterday.
The ceremony, at the Youth Development Centre in Kampong Tanah Jambu, saw Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin presenting certificates and prizes to the students.
The minister commended the programme organisers and hoped that other strategic partners of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) would take heed, to help enhance the impact of such programmes.
“For instance, specialised teaching support will give a better outcome for students who need further support, apart from efforts to expand this programme to more students nationwide,”
he added.
The programme, which gives selected underprivileged students from various schools free tuition for Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, Science and English subjects, is organised by the Community and Communication Bureau of the RPN Kampong Panchor Mengkubau Village Consultative Council, in collaboration with TeachMe Guru and the MCYS’ Youth Transformation Community Club, the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA).
Fatimah binti Haji Jamil, the joint chairperson of the programme, said all 44 students scored at least grade A in one of the subjects.
Two students – Wafeeq Shahbudeen and Md Haziq Irfan bin Md Harun – achieved 5As, eight scored 4A and 1B grades, while 86 per cent achieved at least 1A above, an improvement from the previous scores in 2019.
Fatimah said, “The onset of the COVID-19 outbreak in Brunei last year has brought about challenges for the programme launched last February.
“It was temporarily halted last March and resumed last July at my residence, before being moved to the Dato Mohd Yassin Primary School in Mentiri last July until October.
“The daily lessons later moved back to my house and also the house of the programme’s joint chairperson Awangku Abdul Azim bin Pengiran Yusof,” she said.
