Ten students from Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam (SMJA) Secondary School received the Excellent Student Awards (APC), presented by the Head of Cluster 4 at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Haji Juma’ata Sonadey bin Haji Tuah during a ceremony at the school premises yesterday.
Meanwhile, 38 students received the Green Zone Encouragement Award, 30 students for obtaining eight ‘O’ Levels and 88 students for obtaining five ‘O’ Levels.
The school was listed under the Top 10 Performing Schools category for the GCE ‘O’ Level examinations in 2019, having achieved 47.31 per cent of students with five ‘O’ Levels and above.
Principal Hajah Norhashimah binti Haji Burut, in her speech, said despite not reaching their target of 55 per cent, the school still takes pride in its achievement.
She also highlighted three of its students, who were among the 17 recipients of the APC 2019 recently, and one of whom was the only recipient out of six for Grade A and B with two stars for the APC.
Hajah Norhashimah also thanked the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) for sponsoring the prizes, highlighting a need for strong cooperation from parents and guardians as their involvement in their children’s academic achievement is vital.
In its efforts the MoE has implemented to upgrade education quality, several strategies include to produce knowledgeable and skilled students who can contribute to the nation’s development and achieve Brunei Vision 2035. One strategy is the introduction of an intervention programme providing learning support to students needing a one-to-one or group coaching from teachers.
Students are also guided on time management and active learning techniques. A meeting session with the parents of Year 11 students, who are in the red and yellow zones, will begin next month.
