Kolej International Graduate Studies (KIGS) launched its 21st Business Week at the college’s main building lobby area yesterday.
The three-day event serves as a platform for the students from the college’s Faculty of Business to promote a variety of products and services including homemade dishes, clothing, accessories and artwork until January 28, from 9am to 4pm. Other activities include talks by industry professionals, games and activities, as well as student performances.
The event began with the recitation of Doa led by Nordin bin Ajmain, followed by a speech from KIGS’ Chief Executive Officer Dr Haji Azaharaini bin Haji Mohd Jamil.
“The ability to do business well is very important for survival as the business environment is very competitive. There are tips that you need to learn for a successful business,” the CEO said.
He said the event aims to help the students gain an understanding of the setting up and running of a business by applying theories learned in the classroom to real life situation.
“Although the business week may not be exactly similar to a real environment,” he said. “it is close enough to give the students the experience they need to reflect and learn good business practices.”
Dr Haji Azaharaini added, “I believe that this event will not only allow students to be familiar with the external environment to which the business is subjected to that affects their business performances, but they will also gain a better perception of their own abilities and talents, which can help determine their future career paths.”
He also highlighted the impractical mindset of always expecting government jobs to be available once they have completed their studies.
“The reality is, government’s jobs are limited,” he said.
He stated that unlike the past when jobs were waiting to be taken up, today’s students have to look for jobs, and may remain unemployed for several years.
“Nevertheless, the advantage of being a business studies graduate is that you have skills to explore other options instead of relying solely on government jobs,” he said.
The CEO added that they can create opportunities for themselves by setting up a business either on their own or with their peers, which may create jobs for others.
“Being creative in presenting products is one way to approach a business as creative thinking inspires, challenges and helps provide innovative solutions to business-related problems.
“Doing market research is another tip, as they need to know how their current and future customers might view their business.
“They must identify the expectation gaps to create their market strategy and minimise risks in the decision-making.
“There are many more tips from the Internet, your teachers and experienced business people that you know,” he said.
He added, “The event has the potential to be held monthly or biannually to showcase talents found in KIGS and provides means of generating income for its students.”
Dr Haji Azaharaini hopes to encourage similar events in the future, as they complement the college’s academic curriculum and augment the student’s educational experience.
