The South African COVID-19 variant has been detected in one of the cases reported in Brunei Darussalam last January.

“This case was imported from the United Kingdom and was discharged from hospital at the end of January 2021,” said the Ministry of Health (MoH), in its daily update on Thursday.

“The public is urged not to feel anxious on this latest development. The Ministry of Health has taken the necessary regulatory measures, to ensure that the infection does not spread.

“The results of the surveillance activities, so far, have not found any incidents of infection related to this case in Brunei Darussalam.”

According to reports, the South African variant carries a mutation called N501Y, which appears to make it more contagious or easy to spread.
