Homes equipped with fire extinguishers can help reduce fire incidents in the country, Acting Managing Director of Insurans Islam TAIB Holdings Sdn Bhd (IITH) Hajah Nornaimah binti Haji Zainip shared in her opening remarks.

Speaking at an event to handover fire extinguishers, she said that there were 76 calls related to house fires in 2020, according to FRD statistics.

She emphasised that all should work together in raising awareness on fire safety in homes and vehicles to the public.

Fifty-nine fire extinguishers were handed over to long-time participants of the Home Owner Takaful Scheme by Insurans Islam TAIB General Takaful Sdn Bhd (IITGT) in cooperation with the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) yesterday.

Each participant, who were with the scheme for at least 16 years, received a two-kilogramme dry chemical powder fire extinguisher from FRD’s Assistant Director (Planning, Training and Staff) Hajah Siti Mayang binti Haji Hussin.

A demonstration on the correct way to use them was also conducted during the event. Acting General Manager of IITGT Roslan bin Haji Mohammad Tahir delivered a briefing on the Home Residential Takaful Scheme. General Manager of Insurans Islam TAIB Family Takaful Sdn Bhd Haji Shamsul bin Haji Muhammad and senior officers at the Fire and Rescue Department also attended.

The FRD recommends that homes should have at least two to four kilogrammes of dry dust extinguishers, fire blankets and smoke detectors so that residents can be alerted to fires and extinguish them before they cause property or life loss.

The department awarded the ‘Community Service Certificate’ to a total of 101 members of the public who extinguished fires and aided in saving lives prior to the arrival of the fire and rescue teams from 2020 to January 2021, according to the FRD.

FRD provides safety programmes such as the Life Saver 995 General Safety Briefing and fire marshal course to learn the safety aspects when handling emergencies as well as learn correct procedures in using fire extinguishers. In the event of an emergency, call the 995 emergency line.
