Arabic schools recorded significant improvement in the Primary School Assessment (PSR) results last year, despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Islamic Studies Department Acting Director Haji Shamshol bin Haji Omar said this during an appreciation and Doa Kesyukuran event at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School (SUAMPRIPAHS) in Kampong Katok on Saturday.
Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman was the guest of honour. The event hosted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), saw 59 teachers and five Arabic schools being feted for excellence in the 2020 PSR examination.
Out of the 797 candidates in last year’s PSR examination in Arabic schools, 39.77 per cent or 317 achieved five ‘A’ grades, which is a 9.74 per cent increase from 2019, according to Haji Shamsol.
He said 87.83 per cent achieved Grades ‘A’ to ‘B’, a 0.16-per-cent increase, while 97.37 per cent achieved Grades ‘A’ to ‘C’, exceeding the target of 93.72 per cent.
Five Arabic schools received the Education Grant for their improved performance of students achieving five As in the PSR – Bandar Seri Begawan Arabic Preparatory School, Rimba Arabic School, Ma’had Islam Brunei, Belait Arabic School and Temburong Arabic Preparatory School.
Temburong Arabic Preparatory School also received another grant for achieving 100 per cent grades ‘A’ to ‘C’ in the 2020 PSR.
Meanwhile, 59 religious subject teachers were awarded for their contributions.
According to MoRA, the event serves as a recognition for school leaders and teachers, in addition to motivating the schools.
Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar was also present.
