Siti Nurazizah binti Rosazali and Suzimah binti Abdul Wahab were among eight participants who recently completed a slaughtering and butchering community course under the Youth Development Centre (PPB).
Yesterday, in a ceremony at PPB Café and Restaurant, the two women and their fellow participants – Md Ikhwan Shafiq bin Md Sahmsul, Awangku Md Fadillah bin Pengiran Md Karim, Atif Rabbani bin Abdul Rahim, Mohd Akid bin Rosaini, Sujaimi bin Saiman@Saman and Ahmad Rusyde @ Muhammad Nur Firdaus bin Rusli – received certificates from Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan.
Also in attendance were Deputy Permanent Secretary (Youth and Sports) at the MCYS Colonel (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Maiddin bin Pengiran Haji Said and PPB officials.
Assistant Director of PPB Fauziah binti Haji Salleh said, “The slaughtering and butchering community course started on November 23, 2020, with 10 trainees; however, two trainees withdrew and only eight trainees successfully completed the course.
“Two of the trainees were women, while another took part in the course for upskilling, with one being employed with Royal Brunei Culinary (RBC) and another with Wafa Hotel.
“For three months, the trainees underwent five learning modules of training and skills, with the first module being a self-improvement course for three days at Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam in Temburong District.
“In the second module, the trainees were exposed to basic animal handling and local livestock industry. The third module is where the trainees were given a course on slaughtering animals in accordance with Syar’ie Law (Hukum Syar’ie).
“During the fourth module, the trainees were brought to the slaughtering centre to learn about the process of slaughtering to butchering, up until packaging in two companies.
“The final module consisted of the trainees taking turns to be placed in attachment with two local slaughtering companies, for at least a month,” said Fauizah.
For the course, PPB gained the cooperation of the Livestock Industry Development and Veterinary Services Unit under the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT), as well as the Halal Food Control Division of the Syariah Affairs Department under the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA). PPB was also supported by five local companies in the preparation of teaching forces and learning sites: Golden Chicks Abattoir Sdn Bhd, Jamahat Hj Liman Abattoir, Syarikat Mohammed Norfaidzal Bin Hj Zainuddin dan Anak Anak, Syarikat As Sulay and Syarikay Riza Fudhlana Farming.
The Assistant Director of PPB said, “Three trainees have received employment offers, and another three are in the consideration process.”
Siti Nurazizah, one of the female participants, told the Bulletin, “I wanted to learn how to slaughter in accordance with Hukum Syar’ie, and this course offered the opportunity for females to learn.” Currently running a small home-based bakery business, Siti Nurazizah hopes to start a poultry farm in the near future, to help develop the local agriculture sector.
Atif Rabbani, who raises goats on a small farm, said, “It was a bit tiring to learn from zero, but despite the short period of time, we were able to understand the instructions. We were also able to carry out slaughtering and butchering properly, in accordance with Syar’ie Law.”
