Talk focusses on stimulating ideas, nurturing leaders

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) hosted a group of experts in a talk to discuss ideas at the university’s lecture hall yesterday.

Themed ‘Using Technology in a Globalised Workspace’, the talk was facilitated by UTB’s co-curricular club TEDxUTB, in collaboration with TEDxBandarSeriBegawan.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan was the guest of honour.

TEDxUTB President Kevin Siu, who is also an undergraduate student at UTB, said the vision of the club is to empower youth, especially UTB students. He shared that the club started in 2019 with its first TEDx event themed ‘Youth Development’.

Yesterday’s event initiated with a talk titled ‘Digital Literacy’ by TEDxBandarSeriBegawan Founder and Curator, who is also Assistant Professor at the Centre for Communication, Teaching and Learning (CCTL) at UTB, Dr Malai Zeiti binti Sheikh Abdul Hamid.

A second talk titled ‘Can Renewable Solar Energy Completely Replace Oil and Gas-Based Power Generation?’ followed, delivered by Managing Director and Founder of Quaezar Engineering and Construction Hamidah binti Ismail.

Acting Director of Lifelong Learning Centre, Higher Education at the Ministry of Education Dr Sheikh Lukman bin Sheikh Abdul Hamid delivered a talk on ‘Education as a Means to Achieving Social Justice’.

CEO of the Brunei Food Awards and President of Brunei Food and Beverage Alliance Haji Nasir bin Dato Latif followed suit with his talk on ‘A Journey to Zero Unemployment through E-Commerce Development’.

A talk titled ‘Can Brunei Be a Transition Leader in Electric Vehicle (EV) Technology’, by Founder of Mantuka Brunei Pengiran Fairol Malek Faesal bin Pengiran Haji Marali, concluded the series.

Dr Malai Zeiti said TEDxBandarSeriBegawan was founded as a platform for mentoring young people, sharing of ideas and nurturing potential future leaders.

Several initiatives have been organised under TEDxBandarSeriBegawan, to encourage more young talents to speak and share critical ideas to nurture them in becoming the new generation of Brunei’s young leaders.

UTB Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman and Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Brunei Darussalam Homeira Rigi Zirouki were also present.
