HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday highlighted the importance for Asean and the United States of America to deepen strategic cooperation in the areas of people-to-people exchange, nurturing entrepreneurship and innovation, and developing human resources and capacity.
Delivering a titah at the 4th Asean-United States (US) Summit held at the National Convention Centre, Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, His Majesty highlighted the progress of the Asean-US relationship that included the elevation of the Asean-US partnership to a strategic level.
On economic cooperation, His Majesty welcomed the progress of discussions made on various proposed initiatives such as the US-Asean Connect Centres and the Asean-US Internship programme.
As strategic partners, His Majesty stressed the importance to continue to work closely on addressing challenges to international peace and stability. The threat of terrorism, however, remains a serious concern, and the root causes of terrorism and violent extremism must be addressed in a comprehensive manner.
In this regard, His Majesty believed education and greater exchanges between the people, especially youths, play an important role.
His Majesty thanked US President Barack Obama for his personal efforts in strengthening the friendship and cooperation between Asean and the US.
The Asean-US Summit began with welcoming remarks by Thongloun Sisoulith, the Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Chairman of Asean who welcomed the heads of state and government of Asean and the US attending the summit.
This was followed by a statement from President Obama.
Thongloun Sisoulith then invited Dato Laila Utama Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia as the Country Coordinator for Asean-US Relations to convey his statement.
