New citizens called to uphold peace, security

It is the duty of every citizen to abide by the laws and regulations to preserve and maintain peace and security in the country, Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong said.

Expressing gratitude as the country enjoys peace and prosperity under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the minister said this is a valuable Nikmat Kurnia.

“It is the duty and responsibility of all to extend undivided loyalty to the monarch as citizens and residents of the country,” he said at the citizenship certificate presentation yesterday.

“As citizens and residents of Brunei Darussalam, we must create a society that is harmonious and united and have a responsible attitude that is not easily influenced by elements either from outside or within the country.”

The minister also hoped the recipients will appreciate the citizenship granted with the consent of His Majesty not only through the pledge but also in carrying out daily deeds
and practices.

“This serves to contribute a devotional service to jointly build, preserve and defend the sovereignty and safety of the country and sacrifice whether in the form of material, spiritual, mind, body and soul for the sake of the country,” Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar said.

Two hundred and sixty-six applicants who were given the consent for citizenship received citizenship certificates under Section 6(1). They comprised children of Bruneian mothers and adopted children of Bruneian parents under Section 5(6), Chapter 15 of the Brunei National Registration Act.

The ceremony at Banquet Hall of Bangunan Dewan Majlis, Jabatan Majlis-Majlis Mesyuarat began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah by mosque affairs officer followed by welcoming remarks by Immigration and National Registration Acting Director Pengiran Mohammadin bin Pengiran Haji Aliakbar.

The acting director said 49 of the total number of recipients are awarded under Section 5 (6) while the remaining 217 under Section 6(1) and in the department’s effort and initiative in helping the recipients’ strengthen their knowledge, responsibility and identity, a briefing session was held prior to the ceremony.

The April 6 briefing covered Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) principles, Adat Istiadat Brunei and also the Malay language by senior officers from the Adat Istiadat Negara Department, Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Language and Literature Bureau.

Legislative Council members, permanent secretaries, deputy permanent secretaries and acting deputy permanent secretary were also present. Department heads, senior officers at the Ministry of Home Affairs, penghulus and officers and staff from the Immigration and National Registration Department also participated.
