SPEEDING has become one of the most common traffic offences recorded on Brunei roads. In view of this, the nation’s legal committee is mulling to increase speeding fines between the ranges of $50 and the maximum at $500.

“The discussion is ongoing. Speeding is a compound offence and further details will be revealed soon,” said Land Transport Director Dr Haji Supry bin Haji Ladi in his capacity as Chairperson of the Motor Transport Licensing Authority (MTLA) to the media yesterday.

There has also been a change in that certain summon cases are no longer brought to court (given that it may take quite a while), and are instead converted to compound cases.

“The non-compoundable offences that will be changed to compound offences include driving with an invalid/expired or without car licence (road tax); driving a car affixed with plastic film/shades on windows; driving with invalid driving licence or expired driving licence or with no driving licence; and taking a car without the consent of the owner.

“Other offences include the use of mobile phone while driving; driving without a seatbelt and permitting someone without a driving licence to drive,” he added.
