HEART patients, who completed the Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme, came together to demonstrate their full recovery through a brief outdoor exercise as part of the phase 3 outing activity of the programme at the Bio-Innovation Corridor, Kampong Tungku, yesterday.
The event was organised by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team with support of the Cardiology Unit and the Emergency Department of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.
The event sought to further enhance patients’ confidence and empower them and their families to look after health of their hearts to prevent possible heart attacks in future.
Led by Jong Seng Khiong, Senior Occupational Therapist, who is also Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator at RIPAS Hospital, the activity started with a warm-up session followed by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme which consisted of supervised exercise sessions and educational sessions that form the backbone of the programme.
The objective of the rehabilitation programme are to prevent health patients from having a second heart attack, help them change their unhealthy lifestyles and improve their quality of life.
It also helps to empower patients with heart problems to develop self-management skills in managing risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels as well as high sugar levels, smoking, being overweight and inactive.
Haji Suhaili bin Ismail, one of the recovering heart patients who participated in the activity found that he was having heart problems in 2010 and had to take medication.
“Alhamdulillah, I was able to recover from my heart problem after attending the rehabilitation programme. Through the programme, I see that there is an important and positive impact with better health,” he said.
His advice to the public to prevent heart attacks is to conduct regular cardiovascular checkups at the hospital and practise a healthy lifestyle with frequent exercises as well as through balanced diet.
