BRUNEI Darussalam was announced as the overall champion of the 33rd Asean Senior Amateur Golf Championship 2016 after registering a total of 62 points based on seven events in a closing ceremony and prize presentation ceremony at the Parkview Hotel in Jerudong last night.
The points was accumulated based on the country’s performances in the gross team, nett team, stableford team, individual gross, individual nett, individual stableford and age group which took centre stage during the three-day competition at the Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club and the Empire Golf and Country Club.
The Brunei Darussalam team which comprised of Pengiran Haji Hassim bin Pengiran Haji Osman, Haji Raya Dollah, Hanafiah Besar and Lt Colonel (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Ali bin Pengiran Haji Tuah also emerged winners in the team nett and took home the Zakir Challenge Trophy.
The Philippines team comprised of Eduardo Bagtas, who won the Sultan Sallahuddin Challenge Trophy in the individual gross, Cipriano Abdon, Eddy Jose Manzanarez and Lino Magpantay collected the prestigious Tun Henry H.S. Lee Challenge Trophy after winning team gross.
Bagtas took the individual gong after carding a total of 234 strokes followed by Thailand ace Narintanarat Kumtean with 242 strokes in second place and Brunei’s Haji Raya Dollah with 244 strokes in third place.
Ricardo Loyola of the Philippines emerged individual nett winner and collected the Mondonedo Challenge Trophy followed by Thailand’s Chaiyuth Khumpoo and Brunei’s Pengiran Haji Hassim bin Pengiran Haji Osman.
Brunei also collected the Pongpairojana Challenge Trophy after collecting 563 points to Malaysia’s 522.
Brunei’s Patrick Lau carded a 79 to win the Toh Shung Chee Challenge Trophy for best individual stableford score.
The guest of honour at the event was the Minister of Health and Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, who presented prizes to the winners.
Among the highlights of the event were the introduction of the super seniors whom had contributed to the golfing scene and the presentation of certificates to sponsors as a token of gratitude and appreciation.
