TEACHERS are the main source of quality education, and the stimulus for the country’s human resources productivity.

This was stated yesterday by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, during a titah at the 26th Teacher’s Day celebration at the International Convention Centre (ICC), in Berakas.

Describing them as the ‘agents of education’, His Majesty called on all teachers to boost their knowledge, skills and ideas, in view of their significant role.

“Quality education can be achieved through a ‘whole-of-nation’ approach, and assessed through a number of Key Performance Indicators, established under the Education Strategy of Brunei Vision 2035,” said the monarch.

His Majesty then outlined the key indicators, which include determining the number of qualified and excellent teachers; educational institutions that fall below under the required minimum standards; Years 1 and 3 students with low scores in literacy and numeracy; the percentage of BC-GCE ‘O’ Levels passes of five ‘O’s and above; the number of admissions into secondary level education; and the graduation rates of higher educational institutions and technical and vocational schools.

The monarch also called on the Ministry of Education (MoE) to set up a comprehensive plan for producing quality teachers that are both dedicated and capable of managing all manner of learning activities.

“I welcome the MoE’s initiatives in developing the literacy and numeracy programme in the early stages of schooling. This will help students to excel in their studies at the next level. In this respect, the support of various agencies is required, to ensure that the children of this country are well-educated and highly skilled,” said His Majesty, adding that parents also play a major role in their children’s education.

The monarch expressed pleasure at the steps taken by the MoE, in ensuring that the National Education System for the 21st Century (SPN21) would provide the incentive towards realising the aims of Vision 2035.

“SPN21 needs to be on a large scale and incorporated into the country’s development plans. This is crucial, because education lies at the core of the National Development Plan,” said His Majesty.

His Majesty also expressed satisfaction with the mutual cooperation between the MoE, the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) and the PENGGERAK Unit of the Prime Minister’s Office, which focuses on several key areas of assisting student achievements at the primary and secondary level, “It is hoped that this collaboration will achieve the desired results,” said His Majesty.

The monarch then concluded the titah, by congratulating the recipients of the Teacher’s Day Award, in the hope that it would inspire more dedication and commitment among all teachers.
