A 53-YEAR-OLD Chinese man suffered three broken bones on his right foot after being bitten by a crocodile at Sungai Kampong Tenajor, in Labi while fishing on Wednesday.
The victim, Liew Nam Pong, is currently admitted at the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait.
Sharing his ordeal, Liew said it was just another normal day of netting with his wife at the river where they went at around 12pm. The river was about four feet deep and his lower half of the body was in the water during fishing.
When he was about to walk in the river, he felt excruciating pain on his right foot and even though he could not see what was in the water.
Suddenly he realised that it was a crocodile which could be at least 50kg in weight that took hold of him, but he kept his cool and was positive, said Liew.
“I struggled and managed to kick the animal which forced the animal to loosen its grip and leave,” he added.
Liew and his wife left the scene while his foot was still bleeding.
After returning home, they went to the clinic with the help of his family where he was told that the injury is serious and he needed to go to the hospital for treatment.
The hospital found out three broken bones, and Liew underwent surgery on Thursday.
Currently he is under observation at the hospital.
According to Liew, villagers have been seeing crocodiles in the river often, which he thinks is the reason behind a dwindling fish population in the river.
