Kris Karmila’s new book ‘Tekad’ released

PERMANENT Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, yesterday officiated the launching of a book titled ‘Tekad’ written by local writer Kris Karmila.

The book release took place at the Sarmayuda Hall of the Language and Literature Bureau in Berakas.

Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila in her speech noted that creative writing is one form of writing that goes beyond the borders of professional, journalistic, academic and technical writing and it has been identified through the emphasis on narrative skills, character building as well as use of poetic literature.

The process of writing literature is not an easy task and to use the right language one requires basic skills, said the permanent secretary.

Congratulating the writer for her fruitful efforts in adding to the Malay reading collection through publication of her new book, the permanent secretary also hoped that more local writers, particularly from the younger generation, will come forward and put in efforts to upgrade the creative industry.

This, she added, is to ensure that Bahasa Melayu will stand strong in the country and to diversify reading materials for the community.

Prior to the launch of ‘Tekad’, a poetry performance was showcased on stage by one of the budding local poets.

Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila presented certificates of appreciation to several sponsors of the Tekad project following the launch.

Brunei-born self-styled musical poet, writer and song composer Kris Karmila, whose real name is Hajah Karmila binti Haji Sapar, first developed a passion for writing and literature at the age of 10.

She has participated in competitions such as the National Day Poetry Competition as well similar contests organised to mark His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s birthday celebration.

Since then, her works have been featured in Bahana magazine, Antologi Puisi Kembara Merdeka and Antologi Sajak Tongkat Putih by the Language and Literature Bureau.

Kris Karmila has also won several national and international awards.

Among her achievement in the creative industry includes the honour to write new poems for the 182th anniversary of the founding of Kota Batam, when she was invited by the government of Batam where she performed live music.

She was also invited to write five new poems to mark the retirement of Mayor of Tanjung Pinang, Riau, Indonesia.

Apart from actively engaged in musical poetry, Kris Karmila also composes songs and music.
