THE Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) conducted a three-day Advocacy Training Workshop that was designed to help increase advocacy standards for law enforcement agencies.
Aldila binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Principal Counsel and Head of the Criminal Justice Division, in her speech at the recent opening of the workshop held at the Law and Courts Building, expressed the AGC’s enthusiasm in sharing their knowledge and skills in tandem with their strategic vision to be the highest quality legal service provider to the government.
She also hoped that the workshop would create a better appreciation among participants concerning the role of prosecutors, better understanding of the law and the attainment of the necessary skills to equip them for future court appearances.
According to a press release from the AGC, the workshop is aimed at enhancing the advocacy skills of new officers within the AGC and from various law enforcement agencies that employ prosecutors or are considering setting up a prosecution unit.

Some 32 participants from various agencies including the Military Legal Unit of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the Immigration and National Registration Department, Royal Customs and Excise Department and the Labour Department are taking part in the workshop that concludes today.
Over the course of the workshop, participants were shown basics of prosecution, which entailed the drafting of charges and statement of facts as well as the mechanics of how a trial is conducted which involves the questioning of witnesses and the tendering of documents in court.
Following the presentations, participants were tested on their newfound knowledge through a series of case studies and mock trials.
The AGC has organised a number of basic prosecution courses over the last five years but has evolved their training methods to adapt to the needs of its participants based on feedback gathered from those who previously took the course. This marks the second year for AGC to organise a workshop that targets law enforcement agencies.
