THE Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association (PPNBD) through its Amateur Radio Club once again joined millions of scouts around the world by participating in the largest scout jamborees, the 59th Jamboree On the Air (JOTA) and 20th Jamboree On the Internet (JOTI) recently.
OVER 150 cub, junior, venture, rover, air and sea scouts took part in activities from October 15-16.
The JOTA and JOTI activities are carried out every third week of October annually, and what makes the jamboree unique is that each scout that participates gets to communicate with scouts from around the world by using amateur radio at high and very high frequencies while also getting involved through the Internet via online chat and video conferencing.
According to Zainudin bin Haji Ishak, Executive Scouts Officer of Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association, the PPNBD opened two amateur radio stations, one at the conference room of its headquarters along Jalan Gadong using the call sign V84CBS and a station in the Tutong District at the Tutong Scouts Association headquarters using call sign V84CDT.
Present to launch the event was Haji Badar bin Haji Ali, Scout Chief Commissioner.
Also present were Haji Ismail bin Pehin Orang Kaya Ratna Setia Dato Setia Haji Awang Hapidz, Deputy Scout Chief Commissioner; scout commissioners; scout officers; and scout leaders.
The scout chief commissioner had the opportunity to engage in a video conference with Sudaryo bin Haji Osman, Scout Chief Commissioner of Sarawak, who was in Kuching, Sarawak.
Haji Badar was also able to communicate with other scout members who were in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah and the JOTA and JATI Jamboree Camp in Semenyih, Selangor.
Bruneian scouts successfully communicated with more than 40 countries through amateur radio and almost 70 countries via the Internet.
The PPNBD stated that through the activity, scout members will be more confident to communicate with other scout members worldwide using modern communication technology.
