WINRAN Tyre recovered from an astonishing 12-point deficit to beat Home Kitchen & Café 92-89 and sealed a place in the last four in a pulsating affair in the Concepts Veteran Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association in Batu Bersurat last night.
Winran entered the game needing a win to advance into Friday’s semi-final with Home Kitchen proving tough opposition so much so that earned the respect of the team’s captain.
Winran team captain Yu has credited their opponents for putting up a tough test in their must-win group game.
“I would like to congratulate the other team (Home Kitchen & Café) for being tough opponents,” said Yu in a post-match with the interview.
“We were surprised to win this game because our opponents were very tough. Hopefully in the next game we will repeat the same thing tonight.”
Yu said that the victory was a culmination of good defence, teamwork and shooting especially in the free throws.
He is adamant that key man Bautista will return for the semi-final having missed a portion of the tournament.
Having been second-best in three quarters of the tie, Winran found renewed enthusiasm and energy to take the game to their opponents.
Yu said that the motivation from the coaches inspired them to a perfect fourth quarter and was central to achieving the victory.
“The coach told us to stay focused and keep it tight in defence. The coach and the manager gave us motivation.”
