In an interview, Silver Medal recipient Arabiatul Aqilah, 23, who is also a Book Prize recipient, said following her degree in historical studies, she will be pursuing her Master’s degree at the Istanbul Medeniyet University in Turkey.
‘Medeniyet’ is the Turkish word for ‘civilisation’ or ‘culture’. According to Arabiatul Aqilah, she chose Istanbul Medeniyet University for her post-graduate studies because she is very interested in studying the Ottoman Empire which in the past was one of the greatest Islamic empires.
She will also study the connection between the Ottoman Empire and Brunei Darussalam and the Southeast Asian region.
She will be pursuing a Master of Arts in Ottoman Studies and will be flying off to Turkey at the end of the week.
She said after continuing to do well in her studies, she somewhat expected to receive the Book Prize.
But she said that winning the Silver Medal as well was quite a bonus because she did not expected it.
She expressed her thanks to her lecturers in UBD for her achievements.
In her welcoming remarks during the ceremony, Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, Vice-Chancellor of UBD, congratulated the recipients for their outstanding achievements.
She hoped that their achievements will become inspiration to other students to aim higher in their studies.
She also highlighted UBD’s efforts to promote lifelong learning, saying that the newly built Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) provides flexible environment for learning in terms of learning pathway, pace and place for the general public. It provides opportunities for the public to upgrade their knowledge and skills without leaving their work.
It is one of UBD efforts to ensure that it remains relevant in its role in manpower development in the country, she added.
