HIS Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, yesterday officiated the launching of the 3rd Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Convocation Festival, in his capacity as the Pro-Chancellor of UTB.
Upon arrival at the UTB Phase 3 Complex, His Royal Highness was greeted by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Education and the Chairman of the UTB Council; and Associate Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, the Vice-Chancellor of UTB.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal.
His Royal Highness then delivered a sabda for the launching of the 3rd UTB Convocation Festival 2016, which was then followed with a Tausyeh performance and a multimedia show.
Following the performances, His Royal Highness then toured the ‘XLR8 Exhibition’, which consists of four components – The Journey, Strategic Partnerships, 360 Graduate and The Cycle.
The ‘Journey’ exhibit encompasses two tunnels, with the first depicting a brief history of UTB since its establishment 30 years ago in 1986, while at the same time highlighting major milestones in academic and research developments.
The second tunnel, meanwhile, is a display of the initiatives taken to produce marketable graduates, through the development of new skill sets and a reform of the existing curriculum at UTB, to meet the demands of the business industry and stakeholders.
The second component of the exhibition, ‘Strategic Partnerships’, represents a major facet of UTB’s collaboration with several industries in terms of curriculum development, internship placement, knowledge transfer and community activities.
Among UTB’s strategic partners in the showcase were Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd, Puper Aircraft Inc, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Amec Foster Wheeler and BIBD At-Tamwil. The Crown Prince CIPTA Award, which is organised by UTB, was also on display in the exhibit.
The third component of the exhibition, ‘360 Graduate’, is also another major facet of UTB, which seeks to produce well-rounded graduates with strong MIB values through sporting, religious and community-based activities. The exhibit showcases several projects undertaken by students, demonstrating their ability to apply their knowledge, skills and abilities in different settings.
The last component of the exhibition was ‘The Cycle’, which shows how graduates can remain actively involved with the university through the projects organised by its Alumni Association.
A side-feature of this particular exhibit depicts the university’s efforts to sustain and boost interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among school students through the ‘School Adoption Programme’.
His Royal Highness signed a plaque commemorating the launching of UTB’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition at the UTB Gallery.
After the tour of the exhibition, His Royal Highness posed for a group photograph with student representatives, and received a pesambah from the UTB Student Representative Council.
The ‘XLR8 (Experiential Learning Partnership)’ is the theme for UTB’s convocation festival this year, which reflects the university’s mission to provide experiential learning, improve the quality of research and foster key partnerships. The acronym is derived from the phrase ‘experiential (X) learning (LR) partnership (ATE)’, which is also pronounced ‘accelerate’ and signifies the university’s endeavour to ‘accelerate’ efforts to realise its vision to be among the top 10 universities for Engineering and Technology in Southeast Asia by 2018.
Meanwhile, a series of events have been lined up for the festival, including a pop-up career fair, an alumni membership drive and vendors in support of the ‘Bandarku Ceria’ initiative.
The upcoming UTB Convocation 2016 will be held on November 7 at the Plenary Hall of the International Convention Centre (ICC), in Berakas.
