G530 Racing Team ‘A’ beat a strong field of cycling teams in the local circuit with a time of 7:59:35.183 to win the overall title in the 6th Lof Cycling Challenge 2016 which ended along the vicinity of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium yesterday.
Team Giant Miri finished first runners-up after clocking a time of 7:59:49.512 while Belait Cycling Club ‘A’ settled for third place with a time of 8:00:44.603.
The rider team manager Fahmi Ibrahim heaped praise to the trio of Azmi bin Abd Hadzid, Shannon bin Basman and Yudi Rachmad Mursidi adding that the cyclists had delivered according to plan.
“We are very happy with the win because we have prepared this so well for the past 3 to 6 months. Even since last year we have prepared well so basically we target for the team prize and go for the individual events,” said Fahmi in an interview with the Bulletin after the prize presentation ceremony which was held at the VIP parking lot of the Indoor Stadium.
“We prepare and make selection from the best riders to ride for the team and we met everything we prepared in the plan. Basically the riders delivered well today,” he further added.
The team manager said they memorised the route to ensure that the riders familiarise the circuit and collected key points on the race requirements.
“We know the route inside out because we have played on the road for the past five to six weeks. We know all the key sections, the climb and even we looked at into the weather forecast whether it will play a major effect today.
“Depending on the strategy of the team, we have to see from the team list we participated today. Today there are 33 teams and there are a lot of strong teams but we are prepared.
“We have good riders and we believe we can deliver and as you can see from the race that in the last 10km it is kind of a decisive moment where all the strong riders that we want to win make a move.
“We are happy that we have prepared well according to plan,” the team manager continued.
Fahmi expressed his happiness of his team erasing last year’s disappointment of missing out on a podium finish after clinching the title.
“Words can’t describe because we didn’t perform well last year and we delivered this year,” said Fahmi.
Asked if they are preparing for future tournaments, Fahmi is looking forward to the race in Kota Kinabalu in two weeks’ time and has made the initially-planned Brunei Classics early next year to be the main target for the team.
The individual winners included Azmi in the national race category, Chen Chiung Fa of Modesto Cycling Team ‘B’ in the master category and Maximillian Feng HungChiat of Team Giant Miri in the elite category.
Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation (BDCF) in collaboration with the Department of Youth and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and sponsored by Lof Bakery Sdn Bhd, a total of 192 riders were registered for the race including 17 female riders and 33 teams.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof presented the prizes to the winners.
