A HEARING Awareness Charity Bazaar was launched last night at The Mall in Gadong, to raise awareness among the public on hearing impairment.
Initiated by Hear Better Services Co, a hearing assessment and solutions centre at The Mall and supported by the Special Education Unit (SEU) under the Ministry of Education, the project is aimed at providing hearing aids for students under the SEU, and to provide financial support in the training of speech therapists or special needs educators for hearing-impaired children.
Attending the launch as the guest of honour Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus, the Director-General of Education.
In her welcoming speech, Hajah Noorafzah binti Dato Paduka Haji Ahmad, the General Manager of Hear Better Services Co and the Project Manager of the ‘Better Hearing, Better Living’ charity, highlighted the importance of providing aid to children with hearing-impairment: “These children are no different than any other children,” she said.
“They have talents and dreams. and to help them overcome their struggle, we decided to have activities where they can express themselves in a way which comes naturally to them.”
Meanwhile, DST is also hosting an exhibition at the same venue on its contributions to the special needs community, including hearing-impaired individuals.
Carrying the theme, ‘Garden Tea Party’, this project aims to provide hearing aids for individuals from six to 20 years old, and will continue until November 6.
The Hearing Awareness Exhibition is a joint effort by Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, DST and Hear Better Services Co. Providing support as media partners are the Borneo Bulletin and Media Permata.
