FOUR students from the Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic Boys Secondary School (SMALHB) will be representing Brunei Darussalam in the third International Arabic School Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, from April 10-13.
Led by Pengiran Haji Asmadi bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin, the Acting Principal of Mahad Islam Brunei, the students left for Qatar yesterday afternoon.
In an interview, Pengiran Haji Asmadi said that the com-petition is steering clear from the issue of religion, choosing to focus instead on politics, economy, business and society.
“The debating topics were chosen to appeal to the participants from various countries, and not to provoke unrest,” he said.
“I hope that we can achieve success in the competition but in view of the other participating countries, it could be a difficult task. What is most important for us is to acquire experience and strategy.”
The students taking part in the debate are Mohammad Najiihuddin bin Nooralizam, Mohd Amir Mukhlis bin Haji Shamsuddin, Abdul Shafiq bin Roszani and Abdul Qayyum bin Haji Isa.
The debating championship will feature students from Asean, European and Arab countries and the Brunei team is expected to return on April 15.
