THREE Bruneian students have done Brunei proud after winning medals in the 13th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) 2016 at Tangerang City, Banten in Indonesia.
Kiefer Lim Yi of Chung Hwa Middle School and Muhammad Yazid Syafie Muqri bin Haji Zulkhairi of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah School received bronze medals in the Mathematics category, while Liow Jia Shuan of Chung Hwa Middle School received a bronze medal in the Science category.
The students were led by Hajah Normimah binti Haji Abu Bakar, the coordinator from the Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre under the Ministry of Education.
They were also accompanied by two supervising teachers – Amal Nadiah binti Haji Mulok from Sayyidina Husain Secondary School and Suriayanti binti Haji Junaidi from Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School.
Hosted by the Indonesian Directorate of Management for Primary Schools, the Brunei delegates were in Indonesia from November 9 to 13, where the key activities included theoretical examinations, science experiments, social events, tour programmes and a cultural party.
In an interview, first-time participants Kiefer Lim and Muhammad Yazid Syafie Muqri said they were proud of their rankings in the competition.
IMSO is aimed at enhancing the competencies of elementary school students in Mathematics and Science, in addition to developing their intellectual skills in both subjects and fostering friendly ties between primary school students.
Among the countries invited to participate in the Olympiad were Bulgaria, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, the Netherlands, Nigeria and Tajikistan.
