THE Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DPPMB) has reached another milestone with the launching of its new image, ‘The Way Forward’, commemorating the more than 50 years of the chamber’s establishment.
The ceremony took place at the main auditorium of the Design and Technology Building in Anggerek Desa yesterday.
Present as the guest of honour at the event was Dato Paduka Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, the Deputy Minister of Finance.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah read by Haji Ismail bin Haji Mohammad Arshad, followed by a welcoming remark by the President of DPPMB, Dr Haji Kamaruddin bin Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib.
In his remarks, Dr Haji Kamaruddin said that the chamber believes in a future where Malay businesses would feel the need to be more responsible for the communities that sustain them.
“Malay businesses must not only be consistent, competitive and profitable but also become more responsible if they want to thrive in the long term,” he said.
According to him, the chamber has shown its support to local entrepreneurs such as assisting the Chilli Farm Plantation managed by the Kampong Lumapas Consultative Village Council which has offered employment for the local Malays. DPPMB also supports local chicken farms providing jobs for single mothers and assists in the promotion of cottage industries where young entrepreneurs promote their local products.
He further noted that ‘World Café’ is an open space established by DPPMB in providing a platform for members of the business community to engage in an interactive discussion and share views on the current realities of their business and the support they need.
“DPPMB believes that when diversity of thought is embraced, it serves as a powerful unifier to leverage on unique thinking and opportunities associated with it. DPPMB’s ‘way forward’ requires sharing the chamber’s momentum with others. It demands the best interest of the Malay business community at heart. Also, this ‘way forward’ can never happen alone with DPPMB’s efforts. It needs a strong team as well as strong collaboration and partnership with all stakeholders that will make a strong responsible business ecosystem that contributes to sustained economic growth of Brunei Darussalam,” he added.
The event continued with the official launching of DPPMB’s new image by the guest of honour, followed by a presentation on ‘Introducing DPPMB – The Way Forward’ by Fauziah binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib, Assistant Secretary of Trade at DPPMB.
In her presentation, she shared the history of DPPMB to the audience and said that the organisation was endorsed to support the interest of businesses, primarily the development of Malay businesses and other business associations within Brunei.
“To this day, we have businesses represented in the oil and gas industry, agrifood, Halal-related products and services, infrastructure and logistics, tourism, IT and business services,” she added.
According to her, ‘The Way Forward’ image aims towards strengthening the organisation’s fundamentals and resources to meet deliverables, to build on its strength including network, relationships and activities, as well as to main its focus by aligning its activities towards meeting the Vision 2035 in business and economic growth, and beyond which includes the regional trade groupings such as BIMP-EAGA, AEC and TPP.
The event also saw a number of presentations by members of DPPMB on various topics including ‘Cottage and Youth Development’, ‘Community-based Ecotourism’, ‘Business Advocacy – World Café’, ‘Public and Private Partnerships’ and ‘Perspective of an Outsider’, before concluding with a question-and-answer session on DPPMB and its initiatives.
Also present during the event were the members of the Diplomatic Corps in Brunei Darussalam, senior officials from various government agencies and members of the business community.
