THE Sarawak State Library, Malaysia, is looking at the opportunity to exchange expertise and cooperate with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) in the areas of record management and information management.

The potential for cooperation was lauded by Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Haji Hamid Bugo, Chairman of the Sarawak State Library’s Board of Management, who led 14 Sarawak State Library members on a courtesy call to Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil yesterday at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The one-day visit to Brunei Darussalam was to foster closer ties between the relevant organisations and to build future cooperation.

During the courtesy call, Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila explained that the National Archives of Brunei Darussalam, Language and Literature Bureau as well as Department of Museum come under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Later, the delegation visited the National Archives of Brunei Darussalam in hopes of better understanding and building collaboration between both organisations, as well as to exchange views and knowledge on archiving.

The delegation also watched a brief presentation by Acting Director General of Archives Haji Mohamad Jefri bin Haji Awang Sabli.

The archives comprise records, documents or materials that have importance in history, organisations, institutions, human activities and other, which can be preserved because of its long-term value as reference material, national heritage, evidence and online with the legal needs of the National Archives Act, particularly Brunei Darussalam 1975 (revised in 1983 under Chapter 116, Section 4) which states that the National Archives’ main role is to examine any records in the custody of a public office and to advise such office regarding the care and custody of such records.
