THE 3rd Asean Medical Device Committee (AMDC) Meeting began in Brunei Darussalam yesterday.
The meeting highlighted the importance of giving out technical assistance and training to Asean member countries to implement control and to hold discussions with countries or organisations outside Asean that are willing to assist Asean in terms of medical equipment.
These also include training plans and capacity building among Asean member countries and dialogue partners.
The two-day meeting is currently being held at the Ministry of Health at the Commonwealth Drive and is a follow-up of the last meeting held at the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Over 40 participants from Asean and industrial representatives are attending the meeting.
AMDC comes under the Asean Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality (ACCSQ) and was established following the signing of the Asean Medical Device Directive (AMDD) on November 21, 2014 by the trade ministers of Asean member countries.
Among the roles of AMDC and its agendas include monitoring and providing assistance to Asean members to implement AMDD in every Asean nation, to ensure similar and synchronised interpretation of AMDD and to ensure that AMDD is implemented properly and as fast as possible to support the Asean Economic Community (AEC) by outlining work plan till 2025.
The meeting was yesterday chaired by Zamre bin Abdul Rahman, Authority of Medical Device from Malaysia.
The Brunei delegation is led by Abidin bin Haji Othman, Head of Health Care Technology of the Ministry of Health.
The implementation of AMDD is to establish a system that is synchronised for the registration of medical equipment in Southeast Asia towards the formation of integrated medical equipment market in this region.
Meanwhile, AMDC plays a role to ensure that AMDD is implemented by monitoring actions of Asean member countries and to give Asean members technical support and as referral experts in all matters relating to AMDD.
The welcoming dinner on Wednesday night was attended by Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health Dr Hazri bin Haji Kifle.
Meanwhile, as a preparation for the 3rd AMDC Meeting, a workshop on Asean Submission Dossier Template was held on December 5 to 6.
The workshop was coordinated by a Consultant from US-Asean Connectivity through Trade and Investment that aimed to enhance the capacity of technical supervisors from Asean member countries besides giving understanding and interpretation on AMDD. The outcome of the workshop was reported to the AMDC.
