LIVEWIRE recently concluded the last ‘Bright Ideas’ workshop for 2016, to cater for those interested in learning how to start and manage a business. Some 16 participants and members of the public attended the two-day programme, according to a press release.
Mohd Fadhilullah Tudun bin Haji Hassan, the LiveWIRE Brunei Senior Business Counsellor and facilitator for the workshop, explained that the aim of Bright Ideas was to provide a comprehensive programme of business ideas generation and enterprise awareness that will enable candidates to analyse the local economy and identify business opportunities.
The two-day workshop covered topics such as the Mindset of Being Successful, Finding Business Ideas, Starting Up a Business, Personal Finance, as well as Health, Safety and Environment. There was also a simulation exercise that trained the participants on cash flow and profit/loss statements.
Diviy, one of the participants, shared her learning on business types, balance sheets and how to be successful in business, as well as teamwork, forecasting and human behaviour.
What makes the Bright Ideas workshop so popular among its attendees is the way that it is conducted and delivered. The facilitator uses accelerating learning techniques as well as fun and games to create a conducive-learning environment, which enable participants to learn faster and more effectively.
Graduates of the workshop will also be eligible to register for the intensive ‘Become a Successful Owner Manager’ business planning and management training programme, as well as the Leadership Camp programme next year.
Prior to the Bright Ideas workshop, LiveWIRE also ran the Leadership Camp; a three-day exploration programme aimed at inculcating leadership values within individuals and delving into an their positive and negative traits through a self-assessment process.
A total of 26 individuals, comprising graduates from LiveWIRE programmes as well as aspiring entrepreneurs, completed and graduated from the Leadership Camp that was held from November 25 to 27 at Trandie Marina Resort in the Temburong District.
Based on the concept of ‘transforming’ a person rather than ‘changing’ them, the leadership training programme hopes to create a ‘Community of Practice’ approach, according to LiveWIRE Brunei Programme Director and Lead Facilitator for the Leadership Camp programme, Pengiran Redzuan bin Pengiran Haji Abbas.
He added that the programme is also aimed to eliminate the Bruneian mindset of “Malas Ku Ingau” (‘I couldn’t care less’ attitude).
“If Bruneian leaders are like that, then their followers will be fearful… At the camp, we don’t try to change people since people, by nature, don’t want to change. So instead, we attempt to transform them,” he said, while emphasising the concept of unity amongst the participants.
During the camp, the participants were exposed to the natural elements and explored the characteristics that make a leader through theoretical and practical sessions spaced out during the ‘55 hours away from home’, as LiveWIRE refers to it.
The practical session included a day-long jungle trekking and obstacle course, whereby participants were observed by supervisors on how well they could lead and motivate others, as well as how well they performed as team players as “a good leader needs to be a good follower as well”, according to Pengiran Redzuan.
During the trek, experienced guides were also on hand to teach the participants various aspects of survival in Brunei’s rainforests. At the end of the sessions, participants were assessed on their qualities by the supervisors.
Pengiran Redzuan also said that he chose Temburong for the Leadership Camp as he wanted to bring the participants into a “different environment”, while appreciating the district’s natural beauty.
Established in 2001, LiveWIRE Brunei is part of an international organisation operating in 23 countries. It aims to encourage young people to consider starting their own businesses as a career option and to diversify the country’s economy.
“Our goal is to build capacity for business through access to entrepreneurship training, mentoring and business developments, and expanding or increasing youth-owned businesses in the Sultanate. We are currently formulating more programmes in the pipeline for 2017,” added Pengiran Redzuan.
