AN ASSORTMENT of fun-filled and sporting events are set to take place in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, with the 10-day ‘Sales and Traditional Boat Race Fest’ beginning from December 24, 2016.
The announcement was made yesterday during a press conference at the Brunei-Muara District Office, by members of a panel that included Rosdin bin Haji Abdul Aziz, the Acting Assistant Brunei-Muara District Officer; Haji Damit bin Haji Laidin, the Village Head of Kampong Kota Batu and the Acting Village Head of Kampong Pintu Malim and Kampong Sungai Lampai; and Mohd Hasmawi bin Ghani, the Manager of MHG Event and Entertainment Management Services.
All events and activities will take place from 10am to 10pm at the Dermaga Diraja Art Gallery, except on Friday, where they will be held from 2pm to 10pm. The festival will be concluded on January 2.
The festival’s official launch has been scheduled for 2pm on December 26, and one of its major highlights will be the Traditional Boat Race along the Brunei River on New Year’s Day 2017, which is certain to attract boating enthusiasts and other members of the public.
Haji Damit, the organiser of the Traditional Boat Race, has urged boat racers from all four districts to come forward and register for the competition.
Registration is free and the race is divided into two categories. All queries should be directed to Haji Damit, at +6738787031.
Other main attractions for the public include a Cultural Night, singing and colouring competitions and a ‘Mukun’ contest.
Festive stalls are available for rent, and registration is open until 6pm on December 21. All completed registration forms are to be submitted to the Muhibbah Hall of the Brunei-Muara District Office, and for more details on stall bookings, the public can contact the event organiser, Mohd Hasmawi bin Ghani, at +6738141794.
According to Mohd Hasmawi, these stalls will comprise 20 sections for small and medium enterprise (SME) products, 30 sections for food and takeaways, 15 sections for One Village, One Product (1K1P) items and nine sections for ‘salai-salaian’, or freshly grilled food.
All rental sections will be provided with a desk, two chairs and a 13amp electrical plug.
Meanwhile, 10 per cent from the rental proceeds will go to the Brunei-Muara District Orphans’ Fund.
Among the primary objectives of the ‘Sales and Traditional Boat Race Fest’ are to create a festive atmosphere in the Capital; encouraging Bruneians to celebrate the holiday season in the country; to assist SME operators and businesses through various consultative councils; and to promote traditional boat racing among all sections of the local community, especially youths.
The ‘Sales and Traditional Boat Race Fest’ is jointly organised by the Mukim and village consultative councils of the Brunei-Muara District, with the cooperation of the Mukim and Village Institution of the Brunei-Muara District Office.
