FOLLOWING criticism from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) has decided to renovate its basketball court located in Batu Bersurat.

A motion in this regard was passed by the executive committee of the governing body of basketball in the country, on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by Lim Ting Guan, chairman of BBA, Khoo Eng Cheong, deputy chairman as well as Lim Ting Chai, vice-chairman, and others.

Also present were Goh Kim Thiam, lifetime honorary chairman and Dr Chan Sui Kiat, honorary advisor to BBA.

A visiting delegation of FIBA officials had recently expressed dissatisfaction over the facilities at the court.

Following this, sub-committee was established with the task of looking into the upgrading of the basketball court at a previous meeting held earlier this month and it had submitted its findings.

Led by Lim Ting Guan, the sub-committee included Albert Chu, Khoo Eng Cheong, Liew Yin Chian, Soon Seng Lee, Lim Ting Chai, Ang Beng Chin, Ang Eng Kee, Ho Poh San, Andrew Ong, Soon Chin Long, Chai Tze Yun and Chua Teck Chee and had received quotations for the upgrading works from a number of companies.

The executive committee unanimously agreed the decision to upgrade the court as per FIBA’s specifications, and the project is estimated to cost around $91,350 while the new gym and equipment will cost around $23,952.

The basketball rack and rim will come with the cost of $3,000.

The association said it is looking for the government’s support in the upgrading works.

The renovation project, which is scheduled to begin in January next year, will take around 10 weeks to complete, according to the sub-committee.

Dr Chan Sui Kiat urged the current and the upcoming executive committee for 2017-2019 to work together wholeheartedly to promote the game of basketball in the country.

It is hoped that the refurbished court could further fuel the interest of younger generation in basketball.
