THE ZerOnEight Mixed Martial Arts Academy (018 MMA) is ending the year on a high note with a haul of 14 gold and five silver medals, from two separate taekwondo tournaments in Indonesia and Malaysia last week.
Head coach Haji Ismadey bin Haji Hussein spent a gruelling six weeks preparing the 018 MMA teams in terms of management programmes and intensive training.
The athletes were also sent for further training with the taekwondo team of Mercu Buana University in Jakarta, Indonesia, several days before the main tournaments on December 16-18.
In the K1 Super 4 (Semi Pro) Borneo Amateur Championship 3, held in Labuan on December 17, Pengiran Md Dinie bin Pengiran Haji Jamaludin took silver in the Semi-Pro 65kg category, losing the gold to an experienced Filipino athlete from the BAC gym in Labuan.
Meanwhile, in the Indonesian Youth Taekwondo Festival, held at Cibubur, Jakarta, on December 16-17, the 018 MMA team took part in two events: Poomsae and Kyorugi.
In the Poomsae event, the team won seven golds and two silvers in the individual category. They also took one gold in the pairs category and another in the team category.
In the Kyorugi (sparring) event, Mohammad Addy Shahril bin Muhammad Shamsul, Hajah Nur Azhani binti Haji Johaiani and Nur Syahirah binti Haji Mohd Faizal won a gold medal each, while Kyra Daize Domingo, Nurlia Putri Ernawati and Awangku Nur Hafizhurahman bin Pengiran Hamzah each took silver.
Overall, the medal tally for the 018 MMA team was three gold each for Hajah Nur Azhani and Nur Syahirah; two gold and one silver each for Mohammad Addy Shahril bin Muhammad Shamsul and Nurlia Putri Ernawati; one gold and one silver for Kyra Daize Domingo; one gold each for Norafiqah binti Mohammad, Mohammad Rizki bin Ramadhani and Ayesha Batrisyia binti Md Hasnalluddin; and one silver each for Cecilia Maksimon and Awangku Nur Hafizhurahman.
