A TWO-DAY science show workshop was held recently for teachers and students participating in a science show competition as well as teachers from the Ministry of Education.
The workshop that was conducted by Dr Graham Walker from Australian National University aimed to give the participants the opportunity to get new knowledge, skills and tips for the competition as well as teaching science in general, according to a press release from the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC).
Dr Walker said that a science show can act as a supplement in generating curiosity and greater understanding of science for students as well as the general audience. He also shared that the elements needed in making a good show are relevancy, humour and surprise.
The participants were also given the privilege to try out the science demo by Dr Walker as part of their hands on learning experience. The participants also discussed with Dr Walker how to improve their science show.
Pengiran Hajah Fatriah from Paduka Seri Begawan Science College (MSPSBS), one of teacher participants in OGDC science show competition, said, “This workshop will help enhance our skills on how to conduct clear and fun experiments, instill motivation on how to boost students’ confidence for any science presentation either in science classrooms, sharing sessions with peers, etc. Dr Graham Walker shared remarkable ideas and knowledge that suit different level of age, culture and so on. Thumbs up OGDC with the amazing initiative.”
Zati Izni Fazreena binti Haji Mohd Hussin from Paduka Seri Begawan Science College said that the workshop was not only useful for the competition but also for normal classes teaching.
Megha Santhosh Kumar, a student participant from St Andrew’s School said, “From this workshop I am very confident that I will be able to influence people to be more interested in science. It gave me an idea on how to communicate science in such a way that people will not find it intimidating.”
OGDC said that it hoped that by providing the workshop it would be able to help the teachers and students to prepare their science show more confidently and produce a good quality show. OGDC also hoped that by having workshops such as this, it can help teachers’ classroom teachings, simultaneously inspiring students to venture more into science.
OGDC has invited the public to attend the first round of the competition as well as the final on April 14 and April 17 respectively at Lecture Theatre 2, Universiti Teknologi Brunei.
Members of the public can vote for their favourite team through the competition’s official instagram page @OGDCBrunei.
