A FIREFIGHTER requires strong physical and mental strength as well as endurance to overcome difficult challenges in fire incidents. No matter how much training a firefighter undergoes, if he is not determined enough, his efforts will fail.
This was highlighted by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications Haji Azhar bin Haji Ahmad at the closing ceremony of a firefighting course yesterday held at the Airport Fire and Rescue Station.
Ten firefighter trainers completed the 20-week course. Meanwhile, two deputy station officers joined by six senior firefighters also completed a four-week refresher course conducted at the Airport Fire and Rescue Station in preparation for upcoming promotions.
Haji Azhar said it is imperative that the Airport Fire Service provides its personnel with continued hands-on training to ensure the standard operating procedures run smoothly in emergencies.
The Airport Fire Service has a total of 131 personnel who are divided into four units, namely, Operational Unit, Training and Development Unit, Fire Safety Unit and Support and Coordination Unit.
Among the duties of the firefighters are to provide fire protection and safety services to aircrafts using the Brunei International Airport in accordance with the recommendation and requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Also present at the ceremony were Acting Director of the Department of Civil Aviation, Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohd Yusof, and officials from the Ministry of Communications.
