THE Radio-Controlled (RC) Boat championship, which began on January 20, culminated in an exhilarating finish yesterday when Apek bin Maarof won the Champion of Champions category, outpacing the other RC boat contestants.
The championship featured 94 participants from Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Dubai, with 389 model boats being used throughout the three-day event at the Anduki Recreational Park in Seria.
Officiating as guest of honour was Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, who later presented prizes and trophies to the winners and runners-up.
Also present were YB Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin, Legislative Council member and the Penghulu of Mukim Liang; Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; and Haji Haris bin Othman, Belait District Officer.
Haji Abdul Malik bin Abu Bakar, the Village Head of Kampong Pandan ‘B’ and main event adviser, told the Bulletin, “The RC boat race was hosted with the intention of strengthening ties with the other participating countries, while promoting awareness of RC boat-racing among the public.”
He added: “It is our hope to inspire more people to join our community of RC boat racers.”
