THE United Kingdom remains the top choice for ambitious Bruneian students seeking to further their studies, given its high quality education and courses offered.
Despite a slight decline in numbers, there are still over 2,000 Bruneians studying at British universities, constituting 80 per cent of the total number of Bruneians studying overseas.
Acting British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Ben Boddy highlighted this yesterday during the British Council’s annual Education UK Exhibition held at The Empire Hotel & Country Club.
One of the reasons behind this popularity is that British universities offer world renowned education with cutting-edge research, hub for innovations and many other areas, he explained.
“Reassurance is another factor for choosing British universities. Most of the country’s leaders – from ministers to top government officials, business leaders as well the judiciary – have all studied in the UK.
“In turn, Bruneians who have a UK-based education background are globally employable,” he added.
A total of 34 British universities and colleges participated at the exhibition. Representatives were on hand to offer advice on a wide range of topics including available courses, fees, accommodation and every aspect of studying in the UK.
The exhibition looked to continue to serve as a one-stop-shop for future scholars and their families.
Experts from the Ministry of Education, including the Scholarship Unit, were present to guide visitors on the scholarship application procedure.
CfBT Education Services officials helped with queries about the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – a certificate of proficiency in English is an entry requirement for UK Universities.
Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) officers were also present to assist individuals looking to secure student loans and financial packages.
Seminars offered students an in-depth understanding of the different institutions, focussing on ‘Personal Statements: What are UK universities looking for?,’ ‘How to choose the right course’ and ‘Financing your future.’
Also present at the expo were Clare Walker, the Director of Education and Society of the British Council, Malaysia and Cecile Dasal from British Council Brunei.
