Department of Fisheries holds 4-day training course

THE Department of Fisheries of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) recently conducted a training course on Processing Technology and Quality Control of surimi-based products.

The four-day course held at the Fish Processing Building, Department of Fisheries saw the participation of members of different village consultative councils (MPKs) and also companies involved in seafood processing activities. Experts for the training were outsourced from Myscape Management Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of MARDI Malaysia, according to a press release from the department.

The training provided basic knowledge and skills of processing technology and quality control to the seafood processing companies, in the production of surimi-based products. It covered the basic aspects of quality control over raw materials, hygiene, packaging, product labelling, the layout of the factory according to the standards of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and how to create a business plan which includes economic analysis.

Conducted by the Department of Fisheries under the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC) project, ‘Enhancing RTC- Coastal Community Resilience for Sustainable Livelihood and Coastal Resources Management’, the project was funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for Muslim member countries namely Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.

The project aims to improve the socio-economic situation of the coastal fishing communities and making use of the coastal resources sustainably as their livelihoods.

The Department of Fisheries prior to this course has implemented a number of training programmes funded by this project such as ‘Maintenance of Yamaha Outboard Motor’ and ‘Maintenance/Restoration of Fishing Net’ which were attended by local fishermen community. Other training programmes funded by the project are being scheduled for the near future.
