THE HEALTH Promotion Centre (HPC) under the Ministry of Health in collaboration with Ghanim International Corporation Sdn Bhd yesterday held a one-day workshop on ‘Healthier Choice Initiative’.
The workshop was officially launched at the HPC by Dr Justin Wong, Medical Superintendent (Public Health) of Public Health Service at the Ministry of Health.
During the workshop, senior dietician at the HPC, Haji Zakaria bin Haji Kamis, explained that in a public survey on healthier food choices, 98 per cent of the respondents said wanted to have healthier food choices made available in supermarkets in the country.
Haji Zakaria explained that there are many healthier choices available in stores, but many people are not aware of how to make the right choices.
The ‘Healthier Choice’ label, which has been used in most countries, could provide awareness in selecting the healthier option.
The HPC also took the initiative of visiting several supermarkets in doubling their efforts in promoting a ‘Healthy Supermarket’ and to provide advice and explanation on healthier options.
In an effort to shape Brunei into a healthier nation, the HPC also introduced the Healthier Choice logo on food that have met certain nutrient criteria set as a benchmark for every selected items and products approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The one-day workshop also held a discussion on business opportunities for food industries locally and internationally, food labelling regulation in Brunei, public-private partnership, healthier choice product marketing, as well as an open dialogue session.
