BRUNEI Darussalam’s refereeing capabilities reached a new milestone after Amdillah Zainuddin was appointed as the fourth official tasked to be on duty in an AFC Champions League Group ‘G’ match between Kawasaki Frontale of Japan and Suwon Samsung Bluewings of the Republic of Korea at the Todoroki Athletics Stadium in Kawasaki, Japan on February 22.

The country’s official was selected by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the highest possible honour that could be bestowed to a member association representative following an extensive demonstration of high competence in the refereeing course.

Amdillah was visibly pleased and proud after being selected to be an official for a match which will see two of the Asian’s elites locking horns in a cup competition.

The national referee oversaw three matches in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-16 Youth Championship and served as the fourth official in the S League ties involving DPMM FC.

He also famously brandished a red card to Philippines Under-16s Lean Panes Perez for a second bookable offence in a 3-3 thriller in the AFF Under-16 match against Vietnam.

J1 League side Kawasaki qualified for the Champions League group stage after finishing second in the table thus automatically reaching the semi-finals for a shot at the Japanese championship title.

Kawasaki narrowly lost to Kashima Antlers 1-0 who proceeded to stun Urawa Red Diamonds in the final.

K League Classic side Suwon Samsung Bluewings earned a berth in Asia’s equivalent of the UEFA Champions League after winning the Korean FA Cup last year.

The Blue Wing prevented league champions FC Seoul from accomplishing the league and cup double after beating them 10-9 in penalties.
