THE advocate for breastfeeding, HAWA, yesterday stepped up efforts to promote the importance of breastfeeding with the launching of a two-day road show at Sentral Shopping Centre yesterday.

On hand to kick start the road show was Datin Hajah Masni binti Haji Mohd Ali, the President of BASMIDA (National Anti-Drug Association).

Following the launching, Datin Hajah Masni took a closer look at posters on the formation of the non-government organisation, as well as its vision and mission, which is aimed at sustainably increasing the level of child breastfeeding exclusively for six months so as to improve children’s health.

Among other things, a number of activities have been lined up for visitors such as health checks with assistance from staff members of Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait, a counselling corner for mothers who want to learn more about breastfeeding and ways to overcome challenges, as well as quizzes related to breastfeeding.

In her welcoming address, Hajah Masni binti Haji Munir, the leader of HAWA, explained that the road show is a follow up to an event held last December when HAWA first ventured into a commercial centre to further connect with the Belait community.

“By collaborating with Sentral Shopping Centre, HAWA has helped give the mall’s breastfeeding room a facelift to make it a more conducive and happy place for breastfeeding mothers and their infants,” said Hajah Masni, adding that the Management of Sentral Shopping Centre, Jollibee and Mothercare have been very supportive. She hoped that more commercial organisations would come up with similar Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes with HAWA to promote breastfeeding.

The event also saw the presentation of certificates by the BASMIDA President to seven mothers selected by the Mother and Child Health Department who successfully exclusively breastfed their babies for six months.

Also present was Surayah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, spouse of the Belait District Officer.
